Some brain food for you... One of our favourite s $Some brain food for you... One of our favourite seasonal veggies started arriving last week. We love Romanesco! It always makes us think of an Escher drawing, so we Googled it and discovered… “Romanesco naturally forms a logarithmic spiral and is an approximate (because it eventually ends) fractal, which is a geometric curve with a repetitive pattern, as the shape gets smaller in scale. Each part has the same form as the whole. If you're curious just how many spirals are on one head of Romanesco, it is a Fibonacci number.” So there you go! Bit of a funny in-between time for seasonal veggies but our excellent local growers and market gardens keep us going handsomely. Cornish Kale is a mainstay of the menu right now, along with hispi cabbage, beetroot, and Swiss chard. Fresh mushrooms, smoked nuts, and crisp apples are very much part of the repertoire too.

We can’t get enough of these baby leeks right now.

Crunchy and full of flavour, they were surplus to requirements - thinned out by the grower to let the rest of the crop reach full size. Great with mullet, mussels, bass – pretty much whatever lovely fresh seafood you can get your hands on.

Starting tomorrow, we’re excited to introduce Main Course Mondays! Every Monday evening for the foreseeable we’ll be serving a hearty main course (tomorrow it’s Saffron Seafood Chowder) with a choice of either a pint or a glass of house wine for just £15. Our evening service times are currently 5.30 - 8pm, so you can even drop by after work.

Come and make The Tolcarne your home from home on a Monday night; we’ll have the fires lit, you’re welcome to bring a book or the paper, find a table or perch at the bar. No need to book, just pop by and enjoy a wholesome fish supper at the start of the week, no washing up required!

We’re now booking tables for New Year’s Eve, when we’ll be serving a five-course celebratory menu packed with the best local delicacies we can get our hands on, expertly matched with fine wines.

There will be one sitting only, and anyone who books in advance of the menu being available (let’s face it, Ben likes to leave it to the last minute!) will be contacted personally to check any dietary requirements.

Joking aside, Ben does wait on likely availability of seafood and other fresh produce, so you do need to put yourself in his hands a little – with thirty years’ experience at the highest level it’s not too much of a leap of faith!
